Christmas in Malta

Although Christmas is celebrated throughout Europe, Malta has its own special way to celebrate your holiday season. This article gives you some ideas of the traditions in Malta and what you can do in this celebratory moment.

Christmas traditions in Malta

Malta is a Catholic country, and dedicated one at that. The Christmas season brings the bright lights on and prayer. 'Merry Christmas' in Maltese is "Il-miliary-Tajjeb! "And during This time of year the streets and roundabouts around the Maltese islands are decorated with colored lights and nativity scenes. Private houses are dressed with ornaments and trees Christmas, and churches are well decorated, inside and out!

Schools perform Christmas concerts before the start of the holiday containing Christmas themes on the stories of Christmas, Santa Claus, the Kings or the Baboushka for example. Christmas pageants at local churches are promulgated at 11 pm on Christmas Eve followed by midnight mass to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. In addition to traditional home cooking there are several excellent restaurants in Malta that offer traditional Christmas Day lunch.

Things you can do during your holiday in Malta

After all the Christmas shopping is done – the most popular shopping areas is the Sliema seafront and the High Street Valletta is also decorated with lights and playing Christmas songs – the team of the Maltese population to open their pockets once again, this both as an act of charity. In recent years a program called L-Istrina has conducted, including a marathon 12 hours from noon until midnight filled local entertainment and auctions, as well as telephone lines, whose profits will be donated to selected charities in the island. This has become a real part of Christmas for most of the Maltese who donate voluntarily renouncing Lm1.3 million (over € 3 million) in 2005.

These shows include a lot of visual goodies, games and candy for children, adult jokes and making fun politicians and local celebrities.

Apart from the pantomime, two gifts for children are Qali Ta 'Toys Christmas village and the Holy City. In Ta 'Qali, the area used to be an airfield during World War 2 has been converted into a recreational park offers an ideal place for a picnic and on weekend afternoons. During the month of December, almost 2 weeks, this same area is transformed into a "Village Christmas", with entertainment for the whole family. In the Popeye Village Fun Park in Mellieha, a space becomes the Holy City of toys where children can see more than 200 animated elves prepare the toys that Santa will deliver to children around the world on Christmas Eve, play games, watch Malta's largest crib, see puppet shows and enjoy a fun meal.
